The milk of Human Kindness

As you know I was raving about Port Orford RV village well in the morning some of the people we had met at the chili cook off came to wish us well and one women gave us some snacks and enough money for a huge breakfast. Just so generous, quite humbling really that has never happened to me before. $40 buys a lot of food so another guy on a bike pulling a BOB turned up so we bought him breakfast as well, karma begets karma. The waitress did ok out of it as well πŸ™‚ Dear God am I turning into some kind of mystical shamanic bike riding guru???

The road from Port Orford is so dangerous, just lethal! Is that due to the crazy drivers, logging trucks on acid or the myopic octogenarians in there RV’s??? No it is down to the stunning scenery and Grey whales you can see as you are pedaling along. I saw my first Grey whales yesterday πŸ™‚ very very cool, they were just off shore, in no hurry. I first noticed the spouting, screeched to a halt and there they were, just fantastic. Last night arrived at Gold Beach and as I am waiting for Bruce and Sue there were amorous seals frolicking just under the bridge. Ah loves young dream. What was a bit disturbing was the Cormorant that was paying a bit to much attention to the seals getting jiggy. Deviant sea birds πŸ™‚

Camp site was ok but the restaurant closed at 2.30???? WTF so we came up with a plan and had pizza delivered to the campsite. Mmmmmm pizza great way to end the day. Also made friends with the toughest looking cat I have ever seen, bits of ears missing and a look that will be the last thing a lot of small mammals will ever see. Evil bugger but very friendly πŸ™‚

Met a great Canadian guy called Richard, (wasn’t into hockey?????) and a whole bunch of Canadians turned up as well. a guy called Patrick who was traveling with 3 girls πŸ™‚ he had managed to crash about an hour before and had mashed his shoulder. Poor boy was a bit shaken up as were the girls. They took a day off so will catch up with us down the road.

check out the hill going out of Gold Beach heading south in Oregon on route 101, that was a killer.

Tonight it is the luxury of a motel, and California is 5 miles away. Next post will be from Cal-i-forn-i-a πŸ™‚

Ok does anyone know what the arrow on my bike computer means? It is a Cateye Velo 8 and an arrow appears to be facing up and then facing down? Any ideas?

That hill south out of Gold Beach has worn me out just clicking along it in Google Streetview – respect to anyone daft enough to attempt it on a bike πŸ˜‰

Sounds like you’re getting into your stride over there – love the traveller’s tales and observations.

Moving arrows eh?….. If it’s pointing up, you’re exceeding your average speed, and down…. well we don’t talk about that.
Sounds like you’re having a good time at last. Mum keeps asking me for updates everyday πŸ™‚ Are you going via San Diago?

  3. boffin geek boy says:

The arrow indicates whether you are travelling at above or below your average speed for that journey Son. So if it’s pointing down then you need to push harder. Oh no sorry it’s not a race is it!!

    R xx

Rich – the arrow tells you if you’re speeding up or slowing down πŸ˜‰ keep enjoying..

Sounds awesome Rich. I went Grey Whale spotting off California a few years back. Quite moving seeing those beasts ambling down the coast.
